Helsinki-based UPM has unveiled BioPura, a groundbreaking drop-in solution poised to transform the textile industry’s reliance on petroleum-derived materials. BioPura seamlessly integrates into existing polyester resin manufacturing processes, offering a sustainable alternative by replacing 30% of monoethylene glycol (MEG) with its bio-based counterpart.
This bio-MEG, molecularly identical to its petroleum-derived counterpart, not only upholds the performance standards but also aligns with existing recycling streams. The significance of this innovation extends beyond the laboratory, finding its way into a Vaude fleece jacket, set to debut at ISPO Munich 2023 from November 28-30.
In a close collaboration between UPM and Vaude, this fleece jacket stands as a testament to the tangible shift towards renewable materials in today’s textiles. Michael Duetsch, Vice President of Biochemicals at UPM, emphasizes the urgency faced by the fashion and footwear industries to adopt sustainable solutions. The launch of the Vaude fleece jacket, he states, marks a milestone in responding to this challenge and empowers industry leaders to move beyond fossil-based materials.
Vaude, recognized as a pioneer in sustainable products, echoes this sentiment through René Bethmann, Senior Innovation Manager at Vaude. The partnership with UPM represents the initial stride towards creating polyester derived from non-fossil ingredients. Their commitment is clear – aiming for 90% of all products to be bio-based or have recycled content exceeding 50%.
The broader vision of UPM includes a €1,180 million investment to construct the world’s first industrial-scale biorefinery in Leuna, Germany. This facility will convert sustainably sourced, certified hardwood into next-generation biochemicals, emphasizing UPM’s dedication to scaling refineries producing renewable fuels and chemicals from sustainable biomass.
As the Vaude fleece jacket takes center stage at ISPO Munich 2023, it not only showcases the present viability of BioPura but also sets the stage for a future where renewable, bio-based materials redefine the norms of the textile and apparel industry. UPM’s commitment to sustainability and innovation paves the way for a greener, more responsible future in fashion and beyond.
