Bertrange, Luxembourg For its European-produced sputter (vacuum) coated glass, laminated glass, and flat, untreated glass goods, Guardian Glass has released six new Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). The standard (mid-iron) float glass with the lowest embodied carbon value made in Europe, Guardian ExtraClearTM, is covered by one of the new EPDs ([1]).The six EPDs, which are third-party certified by an independent external verifier (UL), cover the subsequent products:
Glass Guardian NEXATM 6 lower carbon
Glass Guardian NEXATM 9 lower carbon
Glass that has low-iron, Guardian UltraClearTM float
ExtraClearTM Guardian float glass
Product lines of laminated glass include Guardian LamiGlassTM and Guardian Bird1st LamiTM.
Coated glass, including (but not limited to) SunGuard™, ClimaGuard™ and Guardian Sun™ products.
The cradle-to-gate (A1-A3) embodied carbon value([2]) for 4 mm glass in the new unprocessed flat glass EPD, which covers Guardian ExtraClear standard float glass made in Europe, is 9.64 kg CO2eq/m2. This updated figure demonstrates that Guardian ExtraClear is the typical (mid-iron) float glass manufactured in Europe with the lowest embodied carbon value. It is predicted that in mid-2025, a new Energy Performance Data (EPD) for Guardian UltraClearTM low-iron float glass, which is made in the company’s most energy-efficient furnace at its Bascharage, Luxembourg factory, would be available.
EPDs are now offered for the recently introduced reduced carbon glass product line. The embodied carbon values for 4 mm glass for Guardian NEXA 6 and Guardian NEXA 9 are 6.38 kg CO2eq/m2 and 8.58 kg CO2eq/m2, respectively. These values are unique to each product. For Guardian NEXA 6 and Guardian NEXA 9, this indicates an embodied carbon decrease of more than 40% and 20%, respectively, in comparison to the average European float glass dataset ([3]).
