In a groundbreaking collaboration, Swiss sustainable lightweighting company Bcomp has partnered with Volvo Cars to introduce its revolutionary natural fibre composite technology, ampliTex, in the highly anticipated Volvo EX30. This announcement marks a significant milestone as it becomes the first production vehicle to offer Bcomp’s eco-friendly materials to consumers, showcasing the industry’s commitment to sustainability and long-term efforts to reduce emissions.
Bcomp’s flax fibre composites, renowned for their exceptional performance in demanding motorsport applications like Formula 1 and Formula E, will now be available as an optional trim for the EX30’s dashboard and doors. This exciting development follows Volvo Cars Tech Fund’s Series B investment in Bcomp, further solidifying their commitment to driving sustainable innovation.
The Volvo EX30 is an all-electric small SUV that embodies safety, sustainability, cutting-edge technology, and Scandinavian design. Embracing its dedication to offering customers customizable experiences, Volvo has introduced four distinct interior “rooms,” two of which embrace the natural aesthetic of ampliTex trim panels. By incorporating Bcomp’s natural fibre composites, Volvo continues to push the boundaries of sustainable mobility, complementing its ambition to sell solely all-electric cars by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
Bcomp’s previous collaborations with Volvo Cars include the Volvo Ocean Race Recycled Plastics Demonstrator Vehicle in 2018 and the Concept Recharge in 2021, which showcased Volvo’s vision for all-electric car development. Both projects extensively utilized Bcomp composites in the interior and exterior, demonstrating their commitment to utilizing innovative and sustainable materials throughout their vehicles.
AmpliTex, Bcomp’s technical reinforcement fabric, is composed of renewable flax fibres grown in Europe. This unique material not only offers exceptional sustainability and lightweight properties but also provides unparalleled design opportunities. By incorporating ampliTex in the EX30, Bcomp takes a significant stride towards achieving its vision for sustainable mobility and reducing the lifetime emissions of passenger vehicles.
“This is a milestone moment for Bcomp,” exclaimed Christian Fischer, CEO, and co-founder of Bcomp. “We are all incredibly proud to see ampliTex composites in the new Volvo EX30—it will be the first production vehicle delivered to customers with our materials. This is the first step of our plan to scale into the large-scale mobility industry and continue our mission to help our customers decarbonize their supply chains.”
With the Volvo EX30 now available for order or pre-order in select markets, environmentally conscious consumers can soon experience firsthand the seamless integration of Bcomp’s natural fibre composites in Volvo’s commitment to sustainable mobility. As the automotive industry takes significant strides towards a greener future, this collaboration represents an inspiring example of how innovative materials and design can shape the vehicles of tomorrow.
