AIMPLAS, the renowned plastics technology research centre, is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative in collaboration with 14 partners from eight countries. The EU-funded FOREST project aims to develop innovative, lightweight biocomposites with enhanced multifunctional properties for diverse transportation applications.
The project, running until May 2026 and supported by the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation programme, brings together leading industry players and research institutions from Spain, France, Germany, Turkey, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and the UK. Collaborators include Airbus Atlantic Composites, Angaz Tech, Arkema, BASF, Bitrez, Clariant, CRF, Fenix TNT, Fraunhofer, Gen2 Carbon, IRT Jules Verne, and MBHA.
FOREST’s primary objective is to leverage advanced one-shot manufacturing techniques, employing out-of-autoclave processes, to fabricate and evaluate prototypes of next-generation biocomposites. These materials are set to exhibit exceptional mechanical resistance, fire-retardancy, and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capabilities, all while maintaining competitive market prices.
To achieve these ambitious goals, AIMPLAS and its partners will pioneer the development of novel chemistries based on high-biobased content for polymers and additives. By integrating renewable resources into the manufacturing process, the project seeks to reduce the environmental impact associated with traditional plastics.
Furthermore, the FOREST project tackles the pressing issue of carbon fibre composite waste by exploring methods for its efficient recovery. The consortium aims to transform this waste into high-quality semi-finished materials, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and circular approach to composite materials.
The implications of this project extend far beyond the boundaries of traditional composite manufacturing. The lightweight biocomposites developed through FOREST could revolutionize the transportation sector, enabling the creation of vehicles that are not only lighter but also possess superior mechanical properties, enhanced fire safety, and improved resistance to electromagnetic interference.
The successful realization of the FOREST project will have a significant impact on industries such as automotive, aerospace, and maritime, where lightweight materials play a crucial role in achieving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing overall performance.
AIMPLAS, with its wealth of expertise in plastics technology research, is well-positioned to lead this transformative initiative. By fostering collaboration among diverse partners, the FOREST project is set to propel Europe to the forefront of biocomposite technology, reinforcing the region’s commitment to sustainable and innovative solutions.
With the horizon of May 2026 in sight, the FOREST project holds immense promise for the future of transportation, paving the way for a greener, more efficient, and multifunctional world.
