Perspectives
Using feedstocks from used cooking oil under its Bioserve portfolio, Ascend Performance Materials has created nylon 6.6 with a 25% reduced carbon footprint. By employing a mass-balance strategy recognised by ISCC Plus, Ascend guarantees industrial-scale sustainability without sacrificing efficiency. The company’s initiatives are in line with both client demands and emissions reduction.
Ascend Performance Materials reported that it has successfully expanded its Bioserve offering by producing acrylonitrile, hexamethylene diamine, adipic acid, and nylon 6.6 using feedstocks made from used cooking oil. The carbon footprint of the final nylon 6 is 25% less than that of nylon 6 manufactured from feedstock generated from fossil fuels.
Sustainable materials may be produced on an industrial scale without compromising performance by using a mass-balance method approved by ISCC Plus. All of Ascend’s production facilities in the US have received ISCC Plus certification, allowing them to handle circular, bio-based, and bio-circular products.
“We are focused on finding technical solutions for our customers’ challenges,” stated Alex Mihut, vice president of performance chemicals at Ascend. “Using the mass-balance approach allows us to meet the growing need for sustainable materials at scale while continuing to offer reliable performance and quality.”
The company’s Bioserve products have some of the lowest product carbon footprints for industrial-scale nylon 6,6 and its precursors on the market right now, especially when combined with Ascend’s efforts to reduce its scope 1 and scope 2 emissions.
“A pillar we call ‘Operating Without Compromise’ is part of our sustainability strategy,” Ascend’s senior director for sustainability, Chris Johnson, stated. “It is based on a commitment to find well-rounded solutions that meet the needs of our customers and help them achieve their goals.”
