The textile sector is presently negotiating a pivotal moment as it deals with growing national laws and sustainability obligations from international markets, especially the European Union. In response, the Management Development Program on Environmental, Social, and Governance (MDP-ESG) was introduced by the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) for the first time. The goal of this project is to provide industry leaders with the skills and information they need to successfully handle these new challenges.
The three-day event provided a forum for stimulating conversations and creative ideas, and it was held at the Bombay Textile Research Association (BTRA) in Mumbai. Academics, professionals, and executives in the industry convened to discuss urgent ESG issues, such as circular economy initiatives and sustainability reporting.
Ms. Chandrima Chatterjee, Secretary General of CITI, introduced the initiative and emphasized its possible influence on the future of the sector. In addition to highlighting the potential and challenges that sustainability compliance brings, CITI Chairman Shri Rakesh Mehra stated that genuine sustainability necessitates a comprehensive strategy that strikes a balance between social equality, economic growth, and environmental conservation.
Technical workshops that explored the intricacies of ESG integration were included in the agenda. With professional assistance from individuals such as Ms. Bharti Birla of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the first day’s focus was on environmental sustainability. In an effort to lessen the environmental impact of the sector, participants held talks on life cycle evaluations, chemical compliance, and sustainable water management.
Day two’s advanced talks focused on comparing ESG practices in Australia and India under the direction of Mr. Mukesh Garg from Monash University. Mr. Garg emphasized the significance of sustainable governance and extended producer responsibility (EPR). On the last day, seminars delivered by professionals from Partners in Change focused on the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct (NGRBC) and Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR), with an emphasis on human rights and international standards.
At the certificate distribution ceremony that concluded the program, Textile Commissioner Ms. Roop Rashi commended CITI’s initiative and urged cooperative
