Eco-Friendly Textiles That Save Lives

By: Professor Seshadri Ramkumar of Texas Tech University in the United States

In order to protect people, the environment, and the planet, textiles are entering the next stage of sustainability.

On November 26, 2024, I delivered an invited keynote lecture on “Sustainable Life Saving Textiles,” at the 7th International Conference on Sustainable Textiles, at UET Lahore. The talk focused on how textiles can contribute to “One Health Initiatives,” serving people, environment, and planet.

Functional textiles are necessary because of the ongoing dangers and conflict scenarios in various regions of the world at the time of this conference. Reducing plastic pollution while maintaining sustainability is necessary.

The significance of preserving the environment and the livelihoods of millions of people in developing nations was emphasised during the recent United Nations Climate Conference (COP29). This highlights the contributions made by sustainable manufacturing, textiles, and agriculture.

From growing crops like cotton to creating high-performance materials for space travel, textiles support millions of people.

The textile sector needs to explore opportunities to develop economically and materially sustainable products that can contribute to One Health Initiatives.
