One of the main engines of the Peruvian economy is the textile and apparel sector. Peru is the world’s largest producer of alpaca fibres, accounting for more than 80% of worldwide output. Additionally important are the production and processing of cotton, especially in the country’s north. Peru exported USD 1.87 billion worth of textile and apparel items in 2023, a 19.6% rise over the previous year.

“The Italian attendance at Expotextil is strategic in a context of a needed technological renewal for Peruvian textiles,” stated Marco Salvadè, president of ACIMIT. To remain competitive, the local textile sector must upgrade its equipment and improve the calibre of its operations. Italian technology provides Peruvian businesses with appropriate solutions for manufacturing that is more resource-efficient and effective.

Partnerships with Italian producers of textile machines have already helped the Peruvian textile sector throughout the years. For Italian producers, Peru is the second-biggest market in South America. Italian textile machinery exports to Peru totalled over 18 million euros in 2023. Approximately 8 million euros were sold in Italy in the first half of 2024.
