The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi researchers and the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) have created lightweight bulletproof jackets called ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat). The outerwear has been created at the IIT Delhi’s DRDO Industry Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE).
Native boron carbide ceramic material and polymers were used to make these jackets. The characterization of several materials at high strain rates, together with suitable modeling and simulation carried out in cooperation with DRDO, form the basis of the design configuration. According to the procedures, the armour plates for the jackets have successfully completed all required R&D testing. The jackets are lighter than the maximum weight limitations and match the highest danger levels. specified in the Indian Army’s corresponding General Staff Qualitative Requirement. Along with For various BIS Levels, the minimum allowable weight is 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg, respectively. These modular-design Jackets with front and back armor offer complete protection.
A shortlist of Indian enterprises for technology transfer and handholding was created using the selection criteria matrix. The Center is prepared to share the technology with three sectors.
DIA-CoE is commended for the accomplishment. Secretary, R&D Division, Department of Defense
Dr. Samir V Kamat, Chairman of the DRDO, said that the Lightweight Bulletproof Jacket is an excellent example of the productive environment for defense R&D conducted by DRDO, academic institutions, and business. The Joint Advanced Technology Center of DRDO at IIT Delhi was modified to create the DIA-CoE. in 2022 to collaborate on defense R&D with industry and academia. It has been making efforts to several innovative technology initiatives involving academic scholars, DRDO experts, and industrial associates.
