Making waste useful at Unifi

Having transformed more than 40 billion plastic bottles into Repreve recycled fibres to date, Unifi, based in Greensboro, North Carolina, has now set an ambitious textile-to-textile recycling target of turning textile and yarn waste with the equivalent weight of 1.5 billion t-shirts into new polyester by 2030.

The goal is outlined in the company’s 2023 Sustainability Snapshot along with pledges to reduce the company’s Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 30% and to achieve zero non-compliant water discharges annually by 2030. Further initiatives look to significantly reducing landfill waste at its plants in Central America and Brazil.

“Our fourth annual sustainability publication showcases Unifi’s continuous progress and ongoing commitment to setting and exceeding new sustainability goals,” said CEO Eddie Ingle. “In 2023, we made significant strides in recycling volume, waste reduction and strategy refinement. We look forward to building upon our goal of making waste useful.”
