SaXcell and Birla Cellulose Forge Partnership to Revolutionize Textile Industry Sustainability

 In an exciting development for the textile industry, SaXcell B.V., an innovative technology development company, and Birla Cellulose, the sustainability-focused Man-Made Cellulosic Fibres (MMCF) producer, havee announced a groundbreaking partnership aimed at transforming the way textiles are produced, setting the stage for a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Circular Textile Supply Chain Vision

SaXcell’s CEO, Mr. Erik van der Weerd, expressed the company’s vision to establish a circular textile supply chain through robust partnership and mutual commitment. He emphasized the urgent need to address social and environmental challenges facing the textile industry and shift from a linear to a circular economy. Dr. Aspi Patel, Chief Technology Officer of the Aditya Birla Group and Birla Cellulose, highlighted their strong commitment to supporting innovators in expanding circular fiber offerings within the textile and non-woven value chain. This collaboration aims to help SaXcell move from the pilot phase to commercial demonstration scale, underlining the importance of partnerships in accelerating circularity in the global textile value chain.

Innovative Technology and Sustainability Focus

SaXcell B.V. is known for its innovative technology that recycles used textiles into feedstock for sustainable man-made cellulosic fibers. This process is not only environmentally friendly but also reduces water, land, and chemical usage. Birla Cellulose, on the other hand, is a leading producer of sustainability-focused MMCF, employing closed-loop technologies and a commitment to conservation.

Future Expansion and Sustainability Goals

SaXcell’s journey began with researchers from Saxion University of Applied Science in Enschede in 2015 and has since progressed, with a successful pilot factory built in 2020. The company plans to further expand by constructing a Small Scale Production plant in Enschede, The Netherlands, by 2024. Birla Cellulose operates 12 sites for pulp and fiber manufacturing and actively collaborates with partners to create a broader positive impact on the sustainability of its value chain.
