**Toray Carbon FibersEurope Achieves ISCC PLUS Certification for Sustainable Carbon Fiber Productio**
In a significant stride towards sustainable manufacturing, Toray Carbon Fibers Europe, a subsidiary of Toray Industries, has secured ISCC PLUS certification for its Lacq and Abidos production plants in South-West France. This certification empowers the use of biomass and recycled materials, aligning with Toray’s commitment to reducing the environmental impact of carbon fiber production.
The ISCC PLUS certification, an initiative by the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification, ensures that raw materials are sourced responsibly from biomass or recycled sources. It also guarantees complete traceability throughout the manufacturing process, reinforcing transparency and sustainability.
By adopting a mass balance approach, Toray Carbon Fibers Europe can now allocate and utilize biomass or recycled materials in the production of carbon fiber, prepreg, and other offerings. This breakthrough enables a reduction in the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) of these products, contributing to a circular economy.
Toray’s roadmap includes plans to manufacture carbon fiber from biomass and recycled materials by the end of 2023. The company aims to extend this sustainable production approach to its Ehime Plant in Japan and the Toray Composite Materials America facility in Decatur, Alabama, with both locations targeting ISCC PLUS certification by 2024.
This strategic move aligns with Toray’s broader vision of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Toray has already received inquiries from customers committed to carbon neutrality, and from the end of 2023, it will offer carbon fiber for industrial applications, including automobiles and handheld devices. Future plans involve expanding into sectors such as aviation and sports.
Under Project AP-G 2025, Toray actively contributes to a more sustainable economy by quantifying Life .
